In the midst of the Ceuta crisis, Morocco is seeking alternatives to Spain to reach Europe, and Portugal emerges as a possible route through a new "electric gateway". This electrical interconnector would allow the North African country to diversify its access routes to the European continent.
The Portuguese government clarified in August that the interconnector is in "an evaluation phase and not an investment decision phase". This distinction indicates that the project has not yet progressed beyond preliminary studies on its feasibility.
The completion of the project is conditioned on obtaining European or private funding. Without this financial guarantee, the interconnector will not proceed, which limits Morocco's possibilities of using this alternative route in the short term.
