The United States Department of Defense deactivated advertising trackers on its websites after reports that data collected by the advertising industry was being used to identify the location of American military forces in the Middle East.
The decision came after journalistic investigations revealed that sensitive location information was being exposed through digital tracking technologies used on military websites.
US military authorities acknowledged that exposing location data through digital advertising platforms represented a significant risk to the security of personnel and military operations in the region.
Digital security experts had warned that combining advertising data with location information could allow enemies to identify troop movements and positions, constituting a serious vulnerability for the armed forces.
