Two workers were rescued alive from a tunnel in Nepal nine days after a water, ice and debris avalanche hit the mountainous region on the border between Nepal and China. Nepali authorities consider the rescue a true miracle, as the survivors are the first to be found alive at a dam construction site. Search operations had been underway since August 26, when the flood hit the region.
Images released by Nepal's Ministry of Energy show one of the workers being removed conscious on a stretcher, while the other, covered in mud, managed to stand with the help of rescuers. The two survivors were taken by helicopter to Kathmandu, where they received medical treatment.
Authorities estimate that about 100 people may still be trapped in the construction site tunnels, while approximately 900 workers remain missing in tunnels of six hydroelectric plants affected by the floods. Search and rescue operations continue in the region.
