The ecotax of the Balearic Islands, created to finance the environment, has come to promote tourism, according to a study

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General4 September 2026 at 11:45

The ecotax of the Balearic Islands, the first implemented in Spain, was created 25 years ago with the objective of financing the environment, but over this period the destination of its resources has undergone significant changes. A study developed by researchers from the Department of Geography at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) and the University of Surrey, in the United Kingdom, analyzed the evolution of the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) during the last decade. The research concludes that the ecotax has transformed into an increasingly oriented tool to boost the competitiveness of the tourism sector, rather than focusing exclusively on environmental protection as initially planned. This change in orientation represents the main conclusion of the academic study.

Pensioners in Portugal may be required to return money to Social Security in various situations, including incompatible accumulations of pensions with work income or unemployment benefits, failure to communicate relevant changes in professional status, and not carrying out the life proof for those residing abroad. Disability pensions have specific rules, with absolute disability pension not being allowed to accumulate with work and relative disability having accumulation limits.
