IPMA extends yellow warning due to heat in Almeirim

Jornal O Almeirinense4 September 2026 at 10:42

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere extended the yellow warning due to intense heat in the municipality of Almeirim until 6:00 PM on Saturday, September 5, given the forecast of high maximum temperature values.

For this Friday, September 4, temperatures between 21 and 35 degrees are expected. On Saturday, thermometers should range between 19 and 38 degrees, with a new heat peak expected during the weekend.

Although the yellow warning ends on Saturday, temperatures are expected to remain high on Sunday, September 6, with a minimum of 19 degrees and a maximum of 36 degrees in the municipality.

Given the forecast temperatures, the Directorate-General for Health recommends increasing water intake, even without feeling thirsty, reducing the consumption of alcoholic beverages, and staying in cool, ventilated, or air-conditioned places for at least two to three hours a day. Direct sun exposure is also advised to be avoided, especially between 11:00 AM and the afternoon hours.

Weekend marked by strong instability: thunderstorms intensify in the North and Centre from Saturday afternoon

Mainland Portugal faces a weekend of strong atmospheric instability, with intense thunderstorms forecast for the North and Centre regions from Saturday afternoon (starting at 3pm), caused by the thermal contrast between extreme heat at the surface and a cold air mass at altitude, which enhances the formation of convective cells with heavy rainfall, lightning and possible hail. Simultaneously, 14 districts remain under yellow warning due to high temperatures, with maximums ranging between 27°C on the coast and 38°C in the Alentejo. However, the storm episode will be short-lived, with substantial improvement expected by Sunday, when the sky will clear and temperatures will drop generally, especially on the coastal strip.
