Valença will reinforce the video surveillance system in the urban area of the city through a protocol signed on Wednesday, September 3, between the Municipality and the National Republican Guard. The new system will complement the cameras already existing at the Fortress of Valença and will cover several strategic points, including Rotunda da Trapicheira, Avenida de São Teotónio, the Transport Coordination Centre, Ponte Centenária, the School and Sports Zone and the Railway Station area.
The protocol was signed by the mayor of Valença, José Manuel Carpinteira, and by the commander of the Territorial Command of Viana do Castelo of the GNR, Colonel António Maciel da Silva. The ceremony was also attended by GNR officials, councilors and parish council presidents.
According to the municipality, the measure aims to reinforce crime prevention, protect people and property, support civil protection operations and allow a faster response in risk situations. The system will function as a complement to GNR patrols.
The images collected will be used exclusively by the GNR, in accordance with current legislation on video surveillance, data protection and citizens' fundamental rights.
