World champion, Marcos Llorente announced on Thursday that he will no longer play for the Spanish national team. At 31, the Atlético de Madrid player ends a career of nearly six years with the national team, with 27 matches, two World Cups and one European Championship played. According to the Spaniard, the decision to retire from the national team had already been made before winning the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
"Independently of whether I went to the World Cup or not, or whether we won or not, I had already made this decision," Llorente explained when announcing his farewell on social media. The player leaves Spain just under two months after being part of the world champion squad.
In total, Llorente accumulated 1,625 minutes and four assists in the 27 matches in which he wore the senior national team jersey. His career began in November 2020, when he made his debut under the coach.
