Portuguese MEP Hélder Sousa Silva, elected through PSD and rapporteur of the European Parliament's own-initiative report on "The cultural and creative sectors in the age of artificial intelligence", promoted on Wednesday, 2 September, a hearing in Brussels dedicated to the impact of AI on the cultural ecosystem. The event featured the participation of more than 30 entities from the cultural and creative sectors, covering areas such as music, audiovisual, press, visual arts, performing arts, cultural heritage, and digital platforms.
The work was organized into four thematic blocks dedicated to music, audiovisual, publishing and media, and digital platforms and technology intermediaries. Hélder Sousa Silva argued that the transformation brought about by artificial intelligence requires the participation of different cultural stakeholders in defining policy and legislative responses at the European level.
The MEP highlighted the importance of transparency in the use of artificial intelligence, stating that citizens have the right to know when and how AI was used in the creation of content. Regarding creators' rights, he argued that transparency should not be limited to AI-generated content, but should also cover the use of protected works in the development of technological models, enabling creators to refuse such use.
Hélder Sousa Silva also considered it necessary to ensure clear licensing mechanisms to guarantee fair and proportionate remuneration for creators, arguing that "only in this way can we ensure that innovation enhances human creation and contributes to the sustainability of cultural and creative sectors".
