Lisbon starts in the red. EDP Group and BCP pressure

Jornal de Negócios4 September 2026 at 08:24

The Portuguese stock exchange started the last session of the week in negative territory, with the PSI index recording a decline. This drop was influenced by the pressure exerted by two of the main listed groups in Lisbon.

The EDP group was one of the main contributors to the negative pressure on the PSI. Millennium BCP also contributed to the downward trend of the Portuguese index during this session.

Conversely, Jerónimo Martins managed to gain value, which helped limit the overall losses of the index. The food retailer is one of the heavyweights of the PSI and its gains partially offset the negative impact of EDP and BCP.

This movement occurred in the last session of the trading week, on a day when the Portuguese market was following the trend of other European markets.

Portugal's (limited) shield against rising interest rates

Portugal managed to reduce its public debt by more than a third over the past six years, which, combined with the fact that only a small portion of the debt is subject to rising interest rates, creates significant protection against higher financing costs. These two factors act as "shields" that mitigate the impact of rising interest rates on the Portuguese economy. According to the analysis, Portugal's central problem is no longer convincing markets of its fiscal discipline; rather, a different underlying issue is what the country now faces.
