'We need to take the consumer out of the victim position,' says specialist

Angelo Calori, a specialist in governance, compliance, and financial crimes, developed a master's research in the 25 de Março area, in São Paulo, specifically in the area around Galeria Pagé. During his observations and interviews, he was impressed by the normalcy with which illegal products are commercialized in the location.

The researcher noticed a significant number of people carrying black bags to conceal purchases of pirated, stolen, or contraband products. In one observed situation, a vendor was openly offering electroshock devices on the sidewalk, near two police officers and a sign informing that the sale and consumption of illegal products is prohibited.

Calori describes the commercialization of illegal items in the location as extremely normal and even ostentatious. According to him, nobody is afraid of selling, nor ashamed of buying, not even with military police present at the location.

Calori's study, titled "Consumer Ethical Beliefs About the Consumption of Illegal Products in Brazil," was transformed into a master's thesis. He is also the founder of Calori Compliance consulting.

Portugal's (limited) shield against rising interest rates

Portugal managed to reduce its public debt by more than a third over the past six years, which, combined with the fact that only a small portion of the debt is subject to rising interest rates, creates significant protection against higher financing costs. These two factors act as "shields" that mitigate the impact of rising interest rates on the Portuguese economy. According to the analysis, Portugal's central problem is no longer convincing markets of its fiscal discipline; rather, a different underlying issue is what the country now faces.

Interest almost doubles military purchases bill to 10 billion

The nominal cost of the SAFE rearmament program almost doubles to close to 11 billion euros, with around 4.9 billion euros in interest to be paid until 2075. The values represent only projections, since the European debt emissions that will finance the program have not yet been carried out, meaning the final costs depend on future market conditions.

More expensive money is making big deals difficult in Portugal</minimax:tool_call>: "More expensive money is making it difficult to close big deals in Portugal"

Business acquisitions and sales in Portugal are slowing significantly, with the value of operations falling almost 60% to 5.4 billion euros by August, according to TTR Data. The number of transactions dropped almost 30% to around 330. Among the standout buyers are the Spanish (380 million), British (220 million) and Luxembourgish (208 million), while Portuguese companies are focusing on purchases in Spain (over 1.1 billion). One of the major deals closed this year was the purchase of cement maker Secil by the Spanish company Molins for 1.4 billion. The main obstacles are the increased cost of financing due to ECB interest rate hikes, persistent inflation, the war in the Middle East putting pressure on fuel prices, and the gap between seller and buyer expectations. Goldman Sachs warned that interest rate volatility and persistent inflation are headwinds for the rest of the year.
