Did you know that you can't always pay with coins? The law imposes a limit!

SAPO Notícias4 September 2026 at 07:00

In Portugal, there is a law that imposes limits on payment with coins, something many consumers are unaware of. The legislation establishes a maximum value that merchants are obligated to accept when payment is made exclusively in coins.

Paying small amounts, such as for a coffee, with a handful of coins may seem like a harmless and common practice, but there are legal restrictions that regulate this situation. The law clearly defines how many coins a merchant is obligated to accept during a commercial transaction.

Consumers are often unaware of these rules, which can lead to conflict situations in commercial establishments. The lack of knowledge on the part of both customers and some merchants regarding these legal limits contributes to misunderstandings at the time of payment.

Portugal's (limited) shield against rising interest rates

Portugal managed to reduce its public debt by more than a third over the past six years, which, combined with the fact that only a small portion of the debt is subject to rising interest rates, creates significant protection against higher financing costs. According to the analysis, Portugal's central problem is no longer convincing markets of its fiscal discipline; rather, a different underlying issue is what the country now faces.
