The President of the Republic promulgated a new regime for the carbon market that covers the buildings and road transport sectors. This measure aims to put a price on greenhouse gas emissions from fuels used in these two sectors.
The new regime establishes that a price will be applied to CO2 emissions associated with fossil fuels consumed in buildings and road transport, integrating these sectors into the emissions trading system.
The regime should be fully operational in 2028, from which date the entities covered will have to comply with the established emission reduction obligations.
One of the main characteristics of this legislation is the absence of free allowances for the entities covered, which means that these will have to purchase the necessary licenses to emit carbon, thus encouraging the transition to cleaner energy sources.
