The strength of Flamengo and Palmeiras in the fight for another Brazilian title

extra4 September 2026 at 06:00

Flamengo defeated Mirassol at the Maracanã in a makeup match from the fourth round of the Brazilian Championship and returned to being just one point behind leader Palmeiras. The rubro-negro team demonstrated a high standard of physical and technical play, momentarily overtaking the team led by Abel Ferreira.

With this makeup victory and the 5-1 thrashing of the same Mirassol in round 23, Flamengo reached the top of the championship on goal difference, accumulating 48 points with a goal difference of 27 goals, while Palmeiras had a goal difference of 21.

The race for hegemony in the Brazilian Serie A, which began with Palmeiras' title in 2016, continues to be contested by the two clubs round by round. Flamengo and Palmeiras are the two most successful teams in the Brazilian Championship over the last ten years.

With the update of the points not played in the fourth round, the two rivals are tied in the leadership of the last 63 rounds, since the first round of 2025.

Barça and Real Madrid discard Spanish talent on the benches

Spanish football is going through a moment of great international prestige, with its coaches being highly valued and commanding some of the biggest clubs in the world. However, paradoxically, neither Barcelona nor Real Madrid, the two biggest Spanish clubs, hire Spanish coaches for their benches. Despite the Spanish national team having become world champions, and national coaches being at the peak of their historical value, the Spanish giants prefer to invest in foreign coaches, generating a contrast between the success of Spanish football and the lack of opportunities for their own coaches at the biggest clubs in the country.

Slow ticket sales pace for first game in Rio doesn't worry NFL: 'Confident in fans' passion'

The NFL is confident it will sell all tickets for the first game in Rio de Janeiro, despite the slower sales pace compared to previous events in São Paulo. The matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and Baltimore Ravens at Maracanã, scheduled for September 27, still has available tickets at a larger stadium with higher prices. Executive Vice President Peter O'Reilly acknowledged that demand at a larger stadium presents a challenge, but guaranteed that the sales flow is "not out of the ordinary" and stated he is "very confident in Brazilian fans' passion."
