TRE-DF rejects José Roberto Arruda's candidacy registration for governor of the Federal District

cbn3 September 2026 at 23:05

The TRE-DF rejected the candidacy registration of former governor José Roberto Arruda for the position of governor of the Federal District on Thursday. The vote was unanimous. The rapporteur, Judge Guilherme Pupe, voted for the denial of the candidacy and was followed by three other judges.

According to Pupe, the seven convictions of Arruda for administrative improbity cannot be considered connected. Therefore, the counting of the ineligibility period could not be unified from the first conviction in 2014. The count should begin from the second conviction in 2018, or from the most recent one in June 2026. In either case, according to the rapporteur, the count would prevent the candidacy in this year's elections.

The Electoral Public Ministry reiterated that Arruda is ineligible at least until 2030. The OAB-DF followed the same understanding.

Arruda has already stated that he intends to maintain his campaign and appeal to the Superior Electoral Court if the registration is definitively rejected.
