"Saudade: a Portuguese word for a universal feeling", by Paulo Pisco

This opinion article by Paulo Pisco explores the Portuguese concept of "saudade", arguing that although the word originated in Portugal and was coined by Galician troubadours and championed by King D. Dinis, the feeling it represents is universal. The author cites Swedish journalist Henrik Brandão Jonsson, who wrote the book "Saudade – Cartography of a Feeling" after being fascinated by this concept through the music of Cesária Évora, and who pilgrimed through Portuguese and Cape Verdean emigrant communities in the USA and Venezuela to map this feeling. Pisco concludes that saudade, as a mixture of nostalgia, melancholy, and absence, is inherent to the human condition, especially in an era of growing global mobility, and that it represents a permanent struggle against passing time and fading memory.
