Figurado de Barcelos now benefits from European protection as a Geographical Indication, after its name was entered in the Register of the European Union Geographical Indications for artisanal and industrial products.

The decision was issued by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) on August 31, 2026.

This European protection recognizes and values Figurado de Barcelos as an artisanal product with distinctive characteristics associated with the region, guaranteeing protection against imitations and unauthorized appropriation.

The registration establishes 22 specifications that define the requirements the product must meet to use the protected designation.
