Nurses now take calls forwarded from the SNS 24 line to INEM

From now on, nurses will take calls forwarded from the SNS 24 line to INEM, a function that has until now been exclusively provided by pre-hospital emergency technicians. This change aims to strengthen the response of the Instituto Nacional de Emergência Médica to situations that do not constitute a life-threatening emergency.

The participation of nurses in this circuit will make it possible to reinforce the clinical component of the evaluation of received calls. Nursing professionals bring training that allows for a more in-depth analysis of situations reported by users.

Furthermore, the integration of nurses will enable better use of the Manchester Triage System, a clinical triage protocol used to prioritize calls according to the severity of the situation. This system requires specific technical knowledge that nurses possess.

Pre-hospital emergency technicians continue to play an important role in INEM's structure, but will now have the support of nurses in the initial triage of calls received through SNS 24.
