An old unused telephone booth, located in Belmonte's Municipal Garden, was transformed into a space dedicated to sharing books and stories. The abandoned structure gained a new life and began functioning as a free-access community library for the residents of the region.
The initiative arose within the scope of the "Belmonte Cares" project, promoted by the Belmonte in Motion Association. The project was made possible through the Now Us – Get Involved | Subsidized Projects program, of the Portuguese Institute, which financially supported the realization of this idea.
With this transformation, the space aims to promote reading and the exchange of books among members of the local community. Users can contribute by leaving books they have already read and taking others they have not yet discovered, thus creating a cultural sharing circuit in the heart of the town.
The transformation of the telephone booth is part of a trend of repurposing abandoned structures for community purposes, demonstrating how small projects can have a significant impact on the cultural life of small localities.
