Association considers "culturally unacceptable" solution for Gloria elevator

Público3 September 2026 at 16:34

The Forum Citizenship Lx considered "culturally unacceptable" the solution presented for the future of the Gloria elevator in Lisbon. The association publicly contested the proposal that was revealed during this week.

The association sent a formal letter to the Lisbon City Council, Cultural Heritage and Carris, expressing its opposing position to the proposed solution. The document aims to demonstrate the organization's dissatisfaction with the direction taken for the historic elevator.

The Gloria elevator is one of Lisbon's iconic monuments, a traditional connection between Baixa and the Bairro Alto. Any alteration to its operation or structure has generated public debate and attention from various civil society organizations.

The Forum Citizenship Lx argues that the solution presented does not respect the city's cultural heritage, classifying it as incompatible with the preservation of the elevator's historical identity.
