A federal judge in Maryland temporarily blocked most of President Donald Trump's latest attempt to deny citizenship to babies born in the United States to parents who are not American citizens. Judge Deborah L. Boardman ruled that the Supreme Court had already resolved issues that were reopened by an executive order signed by Trump in August.
The ruling is limited to children born after February 19, 2025, including those who will be born in the future. The judge wrote that the measure would likely affect babies the Supreme Court had already defined as citizens.
The ruling represented a strong rejection of the president's renewed efforts to restrict birthright citizenship, months after the Supreme Court had previously resolved this issue. The temporary block prevents Trump's new policy from taking effect while awaiting further review.
