The Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro (TRE-RJ) granted the right of reply to candidate for governor of Rio Eduardo Paes (PSD) after considering that publications made by former governor Anthony Garotinho (Republicanos) on his social media exceeded the limits of political criticism by associating the opponent with militias.
The action was filed by Paes against Garotinho for publications made on Instagram, Facebook and X. According to the representation, the former governor accused Paes of "recruiting militiamen for his campaign" and classified him as "candidate of the militia".
The case was processed in the Electoral Justice, which analyzed the publications and understood that the content went beyond the political criticism allowed during the electoral period.
If Garotinho does not remove the publications and publish the response text approved by the Justice in his official accounts within the established deadline, he will pay a daily fine of R$ 10 thousand.
