PAN criticizes felling of 55 cork oaks for completion of Via Nordeste

Correio da Manhã3 September 2026 at 15:01

The People-Animals-Nature Party (PAN) criticized the felling of 55 cork oaks for the completion of Via Nordeste, considering the measure unacceptable from an environmental standpoint. The party expressed its protest against this decision that resulted in the loss of these trees.

The felling of the 55 cork oaks was authorized by the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF), the body responsible for the management and protection of nature in Portugal. This authorization allowed the cutting of the trees to continue the works on Via Nordeste, a road infrastructure whose completion required the removal of this vegetation.

Via Nordeste is a road project that motivated this intervention in the territory, with ICNF giving the green light to the felling of the trees as part of the administrative procedures necessary for the completion of the road. PAN opposed this decision, warning about the environmental consequences of the loss of these cork oaks.
