Clergy: Priests Reject "Superhero" Status and Call for Shared Responsibilities

The 11th National Clergy Symposium concluded in Fatima, at the Paulo VI Center, after being held since Monday under the theme "Brothers in the Priesthood and Witnesses of the Gospel." The event brought together priests from across the country to discuss the mission and living conditions of the clergy in Portugal, with its main outcome being a call to restructure this mission and promote greater co-responsibility in Catholic communities.

The rector of the Seminary of São José in the Diocese of Algarve, Father António de Freitas, warned that priests are not "superheroes," but rather "human beings, ministers, and servants," denouncing the exhaustion caused by the accumulation of administrative and management tasks. He advocated for delegating these functions to laypeople with technical competence so that priests can focus on the essential of their ministry.

The synthesis report from the working groups identified priorities as combating loneliness, establishing greater proximity to bishops, and creating multidisciplinary teams to assist parish priests in cases of complex suffering and mental health. Several priests, including Father António Carlos from the Archdiocese of Évora and Father António Almiro Mendes from the Diocese of Porto, reported the isolation and overwork that characterize the current priesthood, while Father Vítor Mira from the Diocese of Leiria-Fatima emphasized that "the mission is not only the priest's, it belongs to all the baptized," invoking synodal awareness.
