Teachers can receive more than 750 euros per month to delay retirement: these are the new rules for hiring

CNN Portugal3 September 2026 at 13:01

The Portuguese Government approved a decree that came into force at the beginning of this month with new rules for hiring teachers in schools. One of the main new features is the possibility for retired teachers to receive a monthly salary supplement of 750 euros to postpone their retirement and continue teaching.

The decree also allows schools to hire retired teachers, thus expanding the range of options available to meet the shortage of teachers in educational institutions.

In addition to retired teachers, schools will now also be able to hire post-Bologna graduates, that is, professionals who completed their higher education after the implementation of the Bologna Process in Portuguese higher education.

These measures come in the context of difficulties in hiring teachers and aim to ensure greater flexibility in the composition of the teaching staff in Portuguese schools.
