Vaccination of babies against respiratory syncytial virus begins on September 16

SIC Notícias3 September 2026 at 13:00

The Executive Directorate of the SNS announced that vaccination against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) for babies will begin on September 16. The vaccine is voluntary and free of charge, intended mainly for newborns and infants to protect them from respiratory infections that can be serious.

The vaccination will take place in the maternity hospitals of public hospitals, as well as in the private and social sectors, thus covering various health units where children are born. In addition to maternity hospitals, primary healthcare will also be involved in administering the vaccine.

The main objective is to protect babies from serious complications caused by RSV, a virus that frequently affects the respiratory tract in the first years of life. The campaign also aims to help reduce pressure on health services, decreasing the number of hospitalizations and consultations related to respiratory infections in young children.
