Gloria Steinem died at age 92 on Thursday. Writer, editor and activist, she became one of the leading names in feminism in the United States over decades of work for women's rights, civil rights and against different forms of violence and inequality.
Born in Ohio and later based in New York, Gloria built a trajectory that crossed some of the major social and political movements in the United States. In 1963, she was at the March on Washington, where she witnessed Martin Luther King's most famous speech.
In the 1960s, she protested against the Vietnam War. In the 1990s, she participated in demonstrations against the Gulf War. The experience gained in these movements helped shape her view on the relationships between race, gender and other forms of oppression.
