Florida will receive more than 5 million free eggs for families in vulnerable situations

Nearly 5.7 million eggs will be distributed for free in communities throughout Florida, benefiting families in vulnerable situations. The initiative is the result of a court settlement involving egg producers, who were investigated for allegations of price reference manipulation of the product. In total, 5.67 million Grade A eggs, equivalent to approximately 472,500 dozen, were destined for the state's food banks. Distribution began at the end of July and reached all 67 counties of Florida.

The operation is coordinated by Feeding Florida, an organization that brings together nine regional food banks and a network of approximately 2,500 community organizations. The distribution also counts with the participation of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the Farmers Feeding Florida program. Florida's Attorney General, James Uthmeier, highlighted that the goal is to get the food to the families that need it most, including children and people in vulnerable situations.

For the Orlando and Central Florida region, the Second Harvest Food Bank received four shipments of eggs destined for the counties of Brevard, Lake, Marion, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, and Volusia. Other regions served include Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Tampa Bay, Jacksonville, and northern Florida. Florida's Commissioner of Agriculture, Wilton Simpson, stated that the existing food bank infrastructure facilitates getting products to those in need.

The distribution occurs at a time when families continue to feel the impact of high food prices. The egg, considered an important source of protein, has become one of the items that have seen the most recent price increases. Families interested should contact food banks and partner community organizations to check availability and service criteria. The expectation is that the initiative will help thousands of families across the state, transforming an egg market legal dispute into a concrete food assistance action.
