Global powers are showing interest in financing Pacific island countries to address the effects of climate change. Palau, Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Tonga and other Pacific islands intend to take advantage of the growing geopolitical rivalry for the region to obtain climate funding from the more powerful countries.
This week, the annual Pacific Islands Forum summit took place in Palau. At this meeting, regional leaders once again warned that rising sea levels and the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events threaten the territories, economies and communities of these islands.
The island nations are trying to use the geopolitical competition between the major powers as a way to secure financial resources to survive the impacts of climate change that are already being felt in their territories.
