Left out? 'Star Wars' takes up only 7% of space in George Lucas's museum that will open in Los Angeles

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will open to the public on September 22, in Los Angeles, with an unusual proposal for an institution dedicated to the arts: placing comics, commercial illustrations, children's art, and folk painting on the same level as works traditionally consecrated by art history. Created by George Lucas after the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012, the museum will occupy approximately 9,300 square meters of galleries and will mainly bring together works from the personal collections of the 82-year-old filmmaker and his wife, businesswoman Mellody Hobson. Although "Star Wars" is one of the main attractions, the franchise represents only 7% of the museum, according to executive director Tracey Bates. The inaugural exhibition, "Star Wars in Motion," will feature, among other pieces, production versions of Luke Skywalker's landspeeder and vehicles used in "Return of the Jedi." Most of the collection is dedicated to artists who, for decades, worked behind the scenes of the entertainment industry, creating visual narratives for film, television, and other media.
