The Mediterranean Diet Fair will present the film "Surda", distinguished with the LUX Prize 2026, on the 3rd, at the Municipal Theatre António Pinheiro, in Tavira. The session will be followed by a conversation with the Spanish director Eva Liberdad.
The film is a drama about a deaf woman who is the mother of a baby who is not deaf. The story was imagined by filmmaker Eva Liberdad after a confession by her sister Miriam Garlo, who also stars in the film. The feature film features subtitles adapted for people with hearing problems and Portuguese sign language interpretation.
"Surda" premiered at the 2025 Berlinale, the Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award. At the 2026 Goya Awards, Eva Liberdad received the Goya Prize for Best New Director and Miriam Garlo the Goya Prize for Best New Actress.
The session is free admission, subject to room capacity, with tickets available at the Europe Direct Algarve stand from 6pm or at the theatre entrance from 7pm. The initiative has the support of Europe Direct Algarve, CCDR Algarve, and the Municipality of Tavira.
