Hoax about 'genital organ theft' with shoulder touch triggers lynchings and more than 80 deaths in six countries in Africa

oglobo3 September 2026 at 10:14

Over 80 people were killed between October 2025 and July 2026 after being falsely accused of "stealing genital organs" in African countries, according to an investigation by the BBC Global Disinformation Unit. The belief that a simple shoulder touch can make a man's genitals shrink or disappear gained traction on social media and triggered mob attacks in at least six countries.

The BBC gathered information from police forces and identified incidents in Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique, Kenya and Malawi, as well as other countries. The accusations, made without evidence, led to assaults, lynchings and deaths.

Tanzanian mechanic Boniface Mgala was one of the victims. In April, he was beaten by a mob in Tunduma, on the border between Tanzania and Zambia. He said he had no way to escape the furious mob that attacked him without any evidence of wrongdoing.

Pending asylum and green card through marriage: be careful before withdrawing the application

The article warns about the risks of withdrawing a pending asylum application when seeking permanent residence through marriage to an American citizen. According to the USCIS NTA issuance policy published in February 2025, withdrawal of an asylum application is among the circumstances in which the agency may issue an NTA, initiating removal proceedings. The text highlights that the two processes — asylum and adjustment of status through marriage — can coexist, but have their own rules and different consequences depending on the manner of entry into the US, immigration history, and stage of each process. The guidance is that any decision to withdraw asylum should only be made after consultation with a licensed immigration attorney, as a pending application does not equate to legal immigration status and withdrawal may create unnecessary procedural risks.
