The United Nations (UN) admitted, for the first time, that the world will indeed exceed the 1.5°C limit defined in the Paris Agreement. This is a significant shift in the organization's position, which previously continued to defend this objective as achievable.
Exceeding this threshold represents a historic negative moment in the fight against climate change. The value of 1.5°C had been established as a critical point to avoid the most catastrophic effects of global warming.
Instead of continuing to defend an objective it now considers unachievable in the short term, the UN is expected to adjust its narrative and strategies to focus on adaptation and mitigation measures for the impacts that can no longer be avoided.
This admission represents a fundamental change in how the international community approaches the climate crisis, shifting from a focus on prevention to a greater emphasis on preparing for the inevitable effects of warming.
