Special exam season for secondary education starts today with 43,501 registrations

Jornal Económico3 September 2026 at 09:19

The special season of secondary school exams began on September 3 with 43,501 registrations, approximately half of those recorded in the second phase held in July, and ends on the 8th of the same month. All students who met the conditions to have taken the exams in the second phase may take the tests, even if they did not manage to do so, with each student able to register for more than one exam.

The exams with the highest number of registrations are Portuguese, with 9,403 candidates, and Mathematics A, with 8,324 registrations. Physics and Chemistry A, with 6,674 registrations, and Biology and Geology, with 6,408, also gather a large number of students. These are followed by Philosophy with 2,726 registrations, Mathematics Applied to Social Sciences with 1,799, Economics A with 1,674, and History A with 1,453 candidates.

This extraordinary season is an exceptional measure announced by the Minister of Education, Science and Innovation, Fernando Alexandre, on July 20, intended to mitigate problems and constraints in the digital grading process and delays in the release of results from the first phase of national exams, ensuring that no student would be disadvantaged by the technical difficulties.

The creation of this special season required the calendar of the second phase of access to higher education to be changed, which has already begun but only ends on September 20, allowing students who now take the exams to apply. Approximately 11,000 places are available for this phase.

Judge denies defense request to remove juror in Lindsey Clancy trial, accused of killing her three children in the US

A US judge denied a defense request to remove a juror in the trial of Lindsey Clancy, 36, after the defense alleged that one jury member was preventing the group from reaching a verdict. Clancy is accused of homicide by strangulation of her three children in Massachusetts in January 2023. On the sixth day of deliberations, Judge William Sullivan rejected the request, and jurors will return on Friday for a new session. The defense argues that Clancy should not be held criminally responsible due to a postpartum psychosis condition, and the case has generated public debate about access to mental health care for new mothers.
