José Carlos is a man from Póvoa de Varzim who, at 4 years old in 1944, remembers having stuck stickers on the windows of his house, after the newspapers reported that Portugal could be bombed during the Second World War.

In Coimbra, José Carlos became involved in the 1961 academic struggles, where he fought for students' rights and freedoms. This experience would mark his lifelong commitment to defending freedoms in Portugal.

As a lawyer, José Carlos dedicated himself to defending political prisoners, journalists and intellectuals, facing what he described as the most "ridiculous" "PIDE" processes of the Estado Novo regime.

After April 25th, 1974, José Carlos turned to journalism and founded the weekly "Jornal" and later the "Jornal de Letras, Artes e Ideias", thus contributing to the Portuguese media landscape in the post-revolutionary period.
