What explains Trump's obsession with renaming places and monuments?

oglobo3 September 2026 at 04:00

Just a few days after transforming Lake Ontario, on the border between the United States and Canada, into "Lake America," American President Donald Trump suggested that the Strait of Hormuz should also be renamed as "Trump Strait." The attempt to shape the world map in his own image is not new.

Since returning to the White House last year, Trump has promoted or advocated various name changes, both domestic and foreign. These initiatives are part of a broader pattern of attempts to rename places and monuments.

In many cases, however, these changes have sparked diplomatic disputes, criticism, and concrete effects. The president's approval ratings remain at historically low levels or near them, suggesting that the measures have not been well received by the population.
