Meloni beats Berlusconi's record for longest government. But will instability return in 2027?

SAPO Notícias3 September 2026 at 00:00

Giorgia Meloni will break the record of 1,412 days at the helm of the Italian government tomorrow, becoming the longest-serving prime minister since World War II. The previous record belonged to Silvio Berlusconi, who governed for the same period between 1994 and 2011.

Meloni has been in power since October 2022, leading a right-wing coalition that includes Berlusconi's party (Forza Italia) and Matteo Salvini's party (League). Her tenure in the executive now surpasses that of other historic prime ministers such as Giulio Andreotti, Romano Prodi, and Matteo Renzi.

However, the article warns of the instability that may return in 2027. Political fragmentation in recent European and local elections, where Meloni's party (Brothers of Italy) suffered some losses, raises doubts about the sustainability of her majority in the future.

The analysts cited in the article point out that, despite Meloni having managed to stay in power longer than her predecessors, the Italian political system continues to be characterized by great instability and internal divisions within governing coalitions.

The new political map of Burriana fails to unblock the 2026 budget

The departure of Daniel Gutiérrez from Vox and his move to the group of non-attached councilors has again altered the composition of the Burriana town council. However, this latest change in the plenary does not seem to open, at least for now, the door to a negotiation to approve the 2026 municipal budget, presented at the beginning of the year by the PP executive (which governs in minority with eight councilors) and which continues without the necessary support for its approval.
