Who Benefits Most from the Motion of Censure?

SAPO Notícias3 September 2026 at 00:03

Chega will present a motion of censure against the Government in Parliament, related to the controversies involving Minister Luís Neves. This initiative takes place in the context of a motion of censure presented by the PCP.

Chega's motion of censure could bring small positional gains to two of the three most voted parties in Portugal. The party led by André Ventura seeks to capitalize politically with this initiative.

However, only one of the parties may face a medium or long-term problem resulting from this political strategy. The motion of censure represents a political maneuver that aims to pressure the Government over the controversies involving the minister.

However, this latest change in the plenary does not seem to open, at least for now, the door to a negotiation to approve the 2026 municipal budget, presented at the beginning of the year by the PP executive (which governs in minority with eight councilors) and which continues without the necessary support for its approval.
