The ride-hailing giant Uber will reduce its workforce by approximately 10% as part of "significant organizational changes." CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced the measure in a message to employees on Wednesday. The company has approximately 34,000 employees and operates in more than 70 countries, according to a recent presentation to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which regulates the U.S. financial market.
According to the statement, the layoffs aim to make the platform "simpler and faster" and reduce coordination delays between teams. The message states that a more agile organization will bring greater clarity in responsibility assignment, faster decisions, and more time dedicated to building rather than coordinating.
Founded in 2009, Uber transformed the urban transportation sector with its app model that connects passengers to private drivers. The company now seeks to optimize its internal structure to face current market challenges.
