A study conducted by EDULOG, a project of the Belmiro de Azevedo Foundation, analyzed the employability of university graduates in Portugal. The research identified which fields of study are associated with greater difficulties in entering the labor market.

According to the study, graduates in Arts, Psychology, Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, and Humanities and Languages are more likely to be unemployed. These areas were identified as facing the most challenges in the transition to the labor market.

In contrast, graduates in Engineering showed a higher likelihood of finding employment more quickly after completing their studies. This area emerges as one of the most favorable in terms of employability.

EDULOG is a project of the Belmiro de Azevedo Foundation dedicated to the study and monitoring of education in Portugal, seeking to identify patterns and trends that can inform policies and decisions in the educational sector.

The future cannot be built without the young

Portugal faces a labor contradiction where companies complain about a lack of workers while youth unemployment remains at 18.4% for the 16 to 24 age group, far above the national average of 5.6%. The article argues that young people are essential for the renewal of organizations and intergenerational knowledge transmission, but warns that attracting them is not enough — they need fair salaries, career progression prospects, and stability. With Eurostat projections indicating a 21% reduction in the working-age population by 2050, the country cannot afford to waste talent. The training of young people is presented as an investment, not a cost, with greater collaboration needed between professional associations, companies, and educational institutions to inform students about existing opportunities and retain the professionals Portugal needs.
