A study conducted with mice demonstrated that a GLP-1 based medication, semaglutide, was able to delay the aging process in the animals. The mice that received the medication at an advanced age showed an increase in life expectancy compared to the control group.
In addition to the increase in longevity, the mice treated with semaglutide showed significant improvements in various areas. Improvements were observed in the physical, metabolic, and cognitive functions of the animals that received the medication.
The study suggests that semaglutide, originally developed for the treatment of diabetes and obesity, may have beneficial effects that go beyond weight control and glycemic control, potentially interfering with the fundamental mechanisms of cellular aging.
