Automotive industry in the European Union has been declining for three years. Timid recovery in 2027?

SAPO2 September 2026 at 19:16

The automotive industry in the European Union faces a continuous decline for three years, with no clear signs of recovery in the short term. The sector has been affected by multiple factors, including the transition to electric vehicles, regulatory changes, and international competition.

According to analysts from insurer Crédito y Caución, production contraction in 2026 is expected to be approximately 0.6%. This forecast indicates that the downward trend has not yet been reversed, maintaining uncertainty about the sector's near future.

However, a slightly more positive outlook emerges for 2027. The same analysts point to a possible recovery of 1.2%, which would represent the first growth after three years of contraction. This is, however, a modest recovery, suggesting the path to full recovery will be long and gradual.

The future cannot be built without the young

Portugal faces a labor contradiction where companies complain about a lack of workers while youth unemployment remains at 18.4% for the 16 to 24 age group, far above the national average of 5.6%. With Eurostat projections indicating a 21% reduction in the working-age population by 2050, the country cannot afford to waste talent. The training of young people is presented as an investment, not a cost, with greater collaboration needed between professional associations, companies, and educational institutions to inform students about existing opportunities and retain the professionals Portugal needs.
