USS Abraham Lincoln arrives in Thailand after more than 280 days at sea and several controversies

CNN Portugal2 September 2026 at 18:37

The United States nuclear aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln docked on Wednesday at the Thai port of Laem Chabang, after a mission of more than 280 days at sea. The ship was the subject of controversies related to conditions on board during this period of more than nine months.

The enormous nuclear-powered ship arrived in Thailand with nearly five thousand crew members, having authorization to remain five days in the country. The sailors visited the beach resort of Pattaya, known for tourism linked to alcohol and the sex industry, a popular destination for American troops since the Vietnam War.

The USS Abraham Lincoln left the state of California in November 2025, heading for a mission in the South China Sea and later to the Middle East. This deployment occurred before the attacks carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran and the consequent regional war, which began six months ago.

Displaced Angolans face serious abuses in Namibia

Displaced Angolans facing extreme drought in southern Angola endure serious human rights violations in Namibia, including summary deportations, discrimination in healthcare services, and degrading living conditions. An Amnesty International investigation documented how the absence of safe migration routes and inadequate legal frameworks condemn thousands of people, mostly women and children, to marginalization. The report collected testimonies from at least 167 individuals between May 2024 and May 2026, revealing practices that violate the prohibition of collective expulsions and the principle of non-refoulement. Namibian authorities did not respond to requests for clarification. The organization demands that Namibia establish a rights-based migration approach and calls for international solidarity and climate financing to protect these climate migrants.
