From oil to electricity: how can the conflict in Iran increase prices?

Expresso2 September 2026 at 18:20

Oil has recorded consecutive increases for three days, natural gas reached its highest value since January 2023, and electricity is also showing higher prices in the Iberian market. These three energy markets are simultaneously on the rise, raising concerns about the impact on consumers and the economy.

The central question is the connection between the conflict in Iran and the possibility of worsening energy prices. The Middle East is a strategic region for oil production and export, and any instability can generate uncertainties in global energy markets.

This topic is addressed in the new episode of the "Economia dia a dia" podcast from Expresso. The episode is hosted by Juliana Simões and explores the reasons behind this upward trend in energy markets and the role that geopolitical tensions play in this dynamics.

The podcast aims to analyze the evolution of the economy on a daily basis, offering listeners a deeper understanding of the factors that influence energy prices and their implications for the Portuguese and Spanish markets.

Netherlands transfers 86 tonnes of gold from the USA and Canada to London

The central bank of the Netherlands (DNB) transferred 86 tonnes of gold from its reserves from the United States and Canada to London, citing growing geopolitical instability as the main reason. The institution explained that gold is more easily tradable from London than from New York or Ottawa, allowing for faster mobilization in case of crisis. The total gold reserves of the Netherlands amount to 612.4 tonnes, valued at 72.2 billion euros. Before the transfer, 31.3% of the gold was in New York and 19.7% in Canada; now, the share in London increased from 18.1% to 32.1%. The operation was carried out through a combination of purchases, sales and physical transport of more than 27 tonnes of gold.
