From nightmare to Duffy's comeback: How trauma and a kidnapping drove the music star away at the height of her career

At 23, the Welsh singer was one of the most acclaimed voices in international pop music. Her hit "Mercy" and debut album "Rockferry" earned her a Grammy and multi-platinum sales. However, after the release of her second album in 2010, the artist suddenly disappeared from the stage, leaving fans and the industry without answers for a decade.

The mystery was only broken in 2020, when Duffy published a long account revealing she had been a victim of kidnapping, drugging, and continued assaults over four weeks. The singer explained that she was drugged at a restaurant on her birthday, transported against her will to a foreign country, and held captive. After regaining consciousness at her own home, she lived through years of isolation and terror. Fear of retaliation from the aggressor — who remains unidentified publicly — prevented her from immediately turning to authorities. Only after being targeted by blackmail and an attempted break-in at her residence did the singer file a police report.

The first approach to music came in April 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, when she sent an unreleased track to BBC radio as a message of hope. Now, 15 years after her last public performance, the Welsh singer, currently 41 years old, made her official return to the stage with an intimate concert for 50 fans in London. Alongside this comeback and the announcement that she is working on new songs, her story of overcoming adversity and the artist's journey will be told in a new documentary series set to premiere on the Disney+ platform.
