The Municipality of Gondomar is studying, together with the municipalities of Maia and Valongo, the creation of a free access to the A4 Motorway. The announcement was made by the mayor of Gondomar, Luís Filipe Araújo, from the Socialist Party, on the sidelines of a visit to the Via Nordeste construction site, which resumed today with the removal of 55 cork oaks, a project authorized by the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests.
According to the mayor, the three municipalities are preparing a common proposal, with the objective of allowing citizens faster and easier access to the A4 and the main communication routes of the Porto Metropolitan Area. Luís Filipe Araújo explained that the initiative falls within the municipal logic of completing the network of toll-free roads to make the intense traffic that is recorded in a growing municipality flow.
The announcement follows what was made in 2018 by the previous mayor, Marco Martins, who intended, from Via Nordeste, a southern connection to the urban network and a northeastern one to serve the parishes of Baguim do Monte, Fânzeres and Rio Tinto. In the case of Valongo, the connection now proposed will mainly serve to improve access to Ermesinde, while for Maia it is mainly access to Águas Santas that is foreseen. The mayor added that projects related to new roads for the Gondomar of the next 20 and 30 years will soon be presented.
