A crime motivated by a food dispute occurred in a steel mill workers' dormitory in Belagavi district, Karnataka, India, on August 23. Two friends, identified as Arunkumar Balishtar and Sathiram Chandradev, were eating chicken while consuming alcoholic drinks, when Arunkumar became irritated upon realizing that the other was eating more portions of the food than he was.

During the argument over pieces of chicken, Arunkumar grabbed a knife and attacked Sathiram, hitting him with a blow to the chest. Immediately after the crime, the attacker took the victim to a government hospital for medical care.

To try to cover up the homicide, Arunkumar told doctors and police that his friend had suffered an accidental fall from a building. However, the medical team that treated Sathiram and the investigators suspected the nature of the wound, which did not match the type of injury caused by a fall.

During the interrogations conducted by Karnataka police, Arunkumar confessed to the stabbing.
