Coordinator of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Portalegre laments lack of magistrates and judicial staff

Rádio Campanário2 September 2026 at 14:42

The deputy coordinating attorney general of the Portalegre District, Helder Cordeiro, lamented the lack of magistrates and judicial staff in the region during the ceremony of the investiture of new magistrates of the Public Prosecutor's Office. The magistrate warned that the moment being experienced is "challenging, complex and of great pressure," where the scarcity of human resources has become a daily barrier that tests the limits of the operational capacity of the courts.

Helder Cordeiro deeply thanked the professionals for their work, recognizing that they face registries with teams reduced to managing thousands of cases, accumulation of tasks and psychological pressure so that procedural deadlines are not missed. He highlighted that the circumstance that the courts continue to provide worthy responses is due "solely and exclusively" to the resilience, professional pride and personal sacrifice of the professionals.

Given this situation, the coordinator argued that modernization must be the strategic force of Justice in the future. He pointed to the need to invest in new technologies, dematerialization, digitization and Artificial Intelligence tools, which he considered crucial instruments for survival and mitigation of the personnel shortage. He stated that AI does not come to replace people, but rather to protect them and alleviate the bureaucratic burden that weighs on the registries.

Helder Cordeiro promised to be a persistent voice before higher instances and the Ministry of Justice, demanding the reinforcement of the necessary resources. His commitment to the new magistrates is based on three pillars: transparency and proximity, flexible and humanized management, and active institutional claim.
