Milei revives the Falklands cause after Trump's threat to deny British sovereignty

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General2 September 2026 at 13:36

The far-right Argentine President Javier Milei showed enthusiasm about the threat by Republican candidate Donald Trump to "review" the historical position of the United States supporting Britain in the dispute over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands. Milei considered the magnate's comment as something "very important" for Argentine interests.

Milei's popularity has dropped not only due to the economic situation in July but also because of the Falklands issue that emerged in society during the World Cup. When Argentine national team players displayed a banner with sovereignty claims after the match against England, the libertarian government expressed its discomfort with this stance.

Trump's friction with London, provoked especially by the war conflict in Iran, offered Milei the opportunity to reignite the archipelago question in Argentine domestic debate. The anarcho-capitalist president intends to attribute a potential political shift by the Republican magnate to the effectiveness of his policy on the issue.
