Fake ads on social media imitate Play Store apps and lead victims to illegal online casinos

SAPO Tek2 September 2026 at 12:23

A NordVPN investigation revealed a large-scale criminal operation that uses fake ads on social media to deceive users. The ads imitate the logos and names of more than 400 legitimate brands, appearing to be applications available on the Play Store.

When users click on these fraudulent ads, they are redirected to illegal online casinos. This tactic allows cybercriminals to exploit consumer trust in well-known brands to attract victims to unauthorized gambling platforms.

The investigation demonstrates how criminals take advantage of the legitimate appearance of the ads to deceive users, making them believe they are downloading authentic applications when, in reality, they are being routed to illegal casino websites.
