Almost one in every five taxpayers is already foreign: June surplus exceeds 363 million euros

SAPO Notícias2 September 2026 at 11:30

Portugal had more than 906 thousand foreign national taxpayers registered with Social Security in June 2026. This number represented 18.6% of the total taxpayers in the country, which means that almost one in every five taxpayers is already foreign.

The data comes from the Randstad Research report, which analyzed the financial contribution of these foreign workers to the Portuguese economy. The direct monthly financial surplus generated by these foreign taxpayers exceeded 363 million euros.

The proportion of foreigners in the total number of taxpayers has been growing in Portugal, reflecting the country's attraction for immigrant workers. This trend has a significant impact on the revenues of the Portuguese Social Security system.

USA: private sector creates 38,000 new jobs in August

The US private sector created only 38,000 new jobs in August, below market expectations and the lowest since January, according to ADP data. Gains were concentrated in healthcare and education, tourism and hospitality, and construction, while industry, professional and business services recorded losses. This weak reading of the labor market, which reflects a pattern of "not firing, not hiring," may reduce the odds of an interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve as early as September, despite official US employment data not being released until Friday.
